Dry Eye, often called Dry Eye Disease (DED), is a common reason why a patient comes into our Alexandria eye practice. Dry Eye can affect a person’s quality of life and ability to perform everyday functions such as driving a car and using a computer. The doctors at Louisiana Eye & Laser Center are recognized dry eye experts. Our doctors are equipped with advanced technology, diagnostic equipment and treatment modalities to meet the needs of patients who have not been able to find relief.

Two Forms of Dry Eye – Aqueous & Evaporative

Aqueous dry eye occurs when the lacrimal glands fail to produce enough of the watery (aqueous) component of tears to maintain a healthy eye surface.

Evaporative dry eye is the most common form of dry eye affecting 65% of sufferers. This form of dry eye is caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) or blocked glands that create a deficiency in the oil layer of the tear film. This can be the beginning of other dry eye disease problems, including damage to the cornea and sight-related issues. Many times, aqueous and evaporative dry eye are found in the same patient.
