Cataract Surgery Makes Driving Safer

Cataract surgery can make you a better driver

Cataracts can disrupt a person’s way of life. Sometimes more than they may realize. Cataract surgery helps restore clear, cloud free, vision. The vision improvement that cataract surgery can provide is substantial. There are studies that prove that cataract surgery not only improves the quality of vision, but also improves a patient’s ability to perform daily tasks such as driving.

Study shows cataract surgery can lead to better driving

In a study performed by Australian scientists, 44 cataract patients were put through a series of tests designed to determine whether or not cataract surgery leads to better, and safer, driving. Each of the patients entered a driving simulator that simulated driving scenarios where drivers must react quickly and precisely to avoid a collision or near collision. The patients drove in the simulation before cataract surgery, after cataract surgery in one eye, and after cataract surgery in the second eye (cataract surgery is performed one eye at a time). The results were incredible.

After cataract surgery in one eye, near collisions and collisions were reduced by 35%. Once cataract surgery in the second eye was complete, collisions and near collisions were reduced by 48%. This study shows that cataracts have a significant impact on a driver’s ability to safely navigate roads and busy highways. Cataract surgery will not only help you see clearly, it will also improve driving ability.

How to tell if you need cataract surgery

There are a few cataract symptoms you can keep an eye out for that can give you an indication that it may be time to schedule a visit with an ophthalmologist. The American Ophthalmology Association (AOA) recommends asking yourself the following questions to determine if cataract surgery is something that can benefit you.

  • Are you able to safely perform your job duties?
  • Are you able to safely drive?
  • Do you have trouble reading or watching TV?
  • Do bright lights make seeing difficult?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, it is time to schedule a comprehensive eye exam with Louisiana Eye & Laser Center.
