What are skin tags?

Skin tags are small, soft pieces of skin that are attached to the skin by a thin stem and they typically appear on the neck, armpits, upper trunk, and body folds. It is unknown as to what causes the growth of skin tags. Skin tags are common and harmless. Most people experience no harmful symptoms unless the skin tag is repeatedly rubbed or scratched. This may happen with clothing, jewelry, or when shaving.

What are moles?

Moles are another very common type of skin growth that comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and quantities. Most people experience the growth of moles during their first 20 years of life and they can be found anywhere on the body, either alone or in groups. Moles are made up of cells which typically produce a brownish color (pigment), however, some types of moles may appear blue, black or flesh-colored. Most moles are harmless and do not cause pain unless you rub them or they bump against something. If you have a new oddly shaped mole or a particularly dark mole, however, or if you find a new mole, it could be beneficial to have them checked by a dermatologist to ensure that they are completely benign.

Why remove a mole or skin tag?

Most moles and skin tags do not require treatment or removal. However in some cases, people may want them removed for cosmetic reasons, or because they have become irritated, inflamed, or painful.

Moles for the most part are harmless, however, it is recommended that you check with a doctor if you notice that a mole looks different from your other moles, or if you find a new mole. Your doctor may need to do tests, most likely a biopsy, on the mole to check the mole for cancer.

How are moles and skin tags removed?

Moles or skin tags should be removed by your doctor or a certified skin care provider. Most skin growths can be removed by a doctor or certified provider by:

  • Cutting it off. Skin tags may be snipped off using a scalpel or surgical scissors. In some cases, moles can be “shaved” flush with the skin. Some moles may have cells that sit beneath the skin. In this case, your doctor may have to cut deeper into the skin to remove the entire mole cells. While this procedure helps prevent it from growing back, it may require stitches.
  • Freezing it with liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen can be applied using a swab or spray where a small amount of super-cold liquid nitrogen is applied to mole or skin tag. The mole or skin tag will eventually fall off. A small blister may occur where the mole or skin tag was, but it will heal on its own.
  • Laser removal. Laser removal is the most efficient and cosmetically friendly option when removing moles or skin tags. Using simple skin lasers, technicians direct a concentrated beam of light to effectively burn away the skin growth. This procedure is minimally invasive and it is generally painless.
The removal of skin growths may hurt a little. Your skin care provider may numb the area with a local anesthetic prior to beginning the procedure. Bandages and ointments may be required once the skin growth has been removed. These procedures usually leave little to no scars or marks.
